We can take comfort that God has already welcomed Rodger into his kingdom. In the midst of our loss we can remember that in this broken world God triumphs!The disease that never was able to overcome the caring person he was is now gone and Rodger now lives for eternity with a healed heavenly body made possible by our Savior Jesus Christ.

National Cemetery Service Text

Celebration of Life

Rodger Allen Gilbert

January 13th 2015

Hello, my name is John Drebinger a friend of the Gilbert family. I have been asked to share a few thoughts as we celebrate the life of Rodger Gilbert.

Please join me in prayer.

Father we gather today in sorrow and joy to celebrate the life of Rodger Gilbert. Sorrow that he is no longer in our presence and joy that he is now in your kingdom. Help us to remember the blessing Rodger was in our lives. Help us to honor his faith and belief in you by growing closer to you every day of our life. We thank you for all the memories we have that make us smile reminding us of the good times we had with this Brother, Husband, Father, Grandpa and Friend. We thank you for the promise of resurrection and eternal life provided by the death and resurrection of your dear Son Jesus Christ. May your Holy Spirit comfort us in the days and years to come.

In Jesus name we pray,

Amen

Rodger and Sandie shared a passage from Genesis Chapter 12, verses 1 through 3

Now the Lord said to Abram,

Go forth from your country,

And from your relatives

And from your fathers house,

To the land which I will show you;

And I will make you a great nation,

And I will bless you,

And make your name great;

And so you shall be a blessing;

And I will bless those who bless you,

And the one who curses you I will curse.

And in you all the families of the earth will be blessed.

The lesson of this passage teaches us we are blessed to be a blessing.

Each of us here can attest to the fact that we have been blessed by the life lived by Rodger Gilbert.

Rodger was born in Wichita Kansas December 21st 1946.

He went home to the Lord on December 5th 2014, surrounded by his loving family.

His greatest blessing and legacy is represented by his three wonderful children, Andrew, Karyn, and Jonathan. He and Sandie were blessed by God with the responsibility of raising these three great kids.

Rodger was an accomplished athlete, when he graduated from Folsom High School in 1965 he was voted the Best Athlete of his senior class. He was a starting player on the Football, Basketball, Baseball & Track teams. In fact he was the starting quarterback. All three of his children followed in his athletic footsteps and were active in high school sports. A proud father he attended as many of their sporting events he could.

His loving daughter, Karyn took part in the Softball World Series in North Carolina in 2001. Rodger had hours of video tape of Karyns games.

Rodger was a life-long fan of the Dallas Cowboys football team. He never failed to relish their victories. Karyn even posted to FaceBook on Sunday following the Cowboys, Packers game: Sorry daddy. Ice Bowl 2 Would have made you just as mad as the first one.

We are at this site today because he is one of those special people who have made our freedom possible. He proudly served his country in the United States Air Force. He was deployed to Libya until his unit was evacuated during the Gaddafi coup.

Upon his discharge, he attended Delta College until his graduation with an Associate Arts degree. He developed his career as a salesman in several areas. He devoted many years to helping organizations accomplish fund-raising goals.

He treasured time with his family, with whom he loved to spend time. They spent many adventure-filled days camping and hiking in the Sierras and the California coast.

Rodger is one of very few parents who can boast that their children have achieved the highest ranks achievable in the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts. Karyn earned the coveted Silver And Gold Awards an accomplishment that is so rare that not many people are even aware of the award.

Both the Silver and Gold Award require special projects and Rodger was always there to support Karyn in accomplishing what she needed.

Andrew and Jonathan earned the rank Eagle Scout. These accomplishments are a wonderful testimony to Rodgers values which he taught to his children by his words and his actions.

As a member of the Boy Scouts for 53 years I can tell you not many parents support their childrens scouting activities as actively as Rodger did.

Because of his sales and fundraising skills he helped make it possible for Andrew and Jonathan to attend The Boy Scout National Jamboree in Virginia. Andrew in 1993 and Jonathan in 2001. Andrew was able to attend the World Jamboree in 1995 in Holland.

I remember to this day driving in Elk Grove California about 20 miles north of Lodi. I saw a Boy Scout in Uniform going door to door selling products to earn money to attend the National Jamboree. The scout looked familiar, it was Jonathan Gilbert. I looked around and saw Rodger nearby in his car. What an awesome gift he gave his children by teaching them they could earn their own way.

He also supported his sons and daughter in, church youth groups. All three participated in national Lutheran youth conventions throughout high school.

Rodger was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Stockton then St. Pauls Lutheran Church in Lodi since 1974. He loved organizing fellowship events from a bowling league to Halloween parties to a Pinochle group.

Many people attend church and never get to know their fellow members. Because of Rodger many members were able to get to know each other beyond the quick hello and goodbye at the back of the church. His organizing of fellowship events and activities gave people the opportunity to become friends and stronger Christians because of that fellowship.

Thanks to Rodger my wife and I joined the bowling league and every week were able to grow in fellowship with our fellow members at Zion Lutheran Church.

Whenever we lose someone close to us we seek comfort. Today we can take comfort that God has already welcomed Rodger into his kingdom. In the midst of our loss we can remember that in this broken world God triumphs!The disease that never was able to overcome the caring person he was is now gone and Rodger now lives for eternity with a healed heavenly body made possible by our Savior Jesus Christ.

Rodgers faith was expressed in actions by his involvement with his church. He was there worshiping with his family on Sundays. Of all he gave his family, his faith in God and teaching those beliefs to them ensures they too will join him for an eternity also made possible by the death and resurrection of Jesus. It is now in their hands to continue this faith and teach it to those whose lives they influence.

May we all look back on our life and be able to say we were a blessing to others as Rodger was a blessing to us.

Thank you for coming today to support and be a blessing to all here today.

Gods blessing on all of us until we also join Him for an eternity of joy.
